Chesapeake Bay Retriever

With an almost similar appearance of the body and temperaments, both Chesapeake Bay retriever and Labrador retriever share some interesting characteristics. However, distinctions between the two breeds could also be understood if adequate association or reading is done. Information for the reading component could be provided through this article.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Chesapeake Bay retriever is a dog breed that has been originated in the United States in the 19th century. They mainly belong to the breed groups of retriever, gundog, and sporting. Chessie, Chesapeake, and CBR are the mainly used common names for these dogs. Chesapeake is a water-loving dog with an appearance much similar to Labrador retriever. One of the most distinctive features of CBR is the coat, which is double layered with the outer coat being wavy (yet it never curls) on shoulders, neck, back, and loins. The hair present on the face and legs should be short and straight in the purebreds. Any shade of brown from light cocoa through dark chocolate colours would be present in their coat while white spots are permitted to a certain extent, but black spots are not allowed in the breed standards. However, ashy or greyish colour shades can be rarely present in purebred Chesapeake Bay retrievers. Usually, a healthy Chessie can live about 10 – 13 years, and it makes an intelligent and affectionate pet for anyone with a great agility throughout the life.

Labrador Retriever

Labrador retriever could be easily introduced as the most popular dog in the world based on the number of registrations, especially 1991. They are also known as Labradors or Labs, and there are three main types of them based on the colourations of the coat viz. Yellow lab, Solid black and chocolate brown. Their coat is smooth, short, dense, and straight; yet the wiry coats are not credited as purebreds. The purebred labs should measure between 56 – 63 centimetres and 54 – 60 centimetres for males and females respectively. The maximum bodyweight is 40 kilograms and 35 kilograms for a female; however, none of them should be weighing less than 27 kilograms as per the breed standards of the accredited kennel clubs. Their eyebrows are pronounced in the broad head, and the lining of eyes is always black while their ears are hanging down above eyes.

Labs possess a great sense of smell that makes them excellent trackers. However, the love and affection of these dogs about humans is mainly due to the high intelligence with the kind and pleasant nature. These highly outgoing dogs can live about 10 – 12 years in average, but there are long-lived Labradors, as well.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever vs Labrador Retriever

• Both breeds have been originated in the American continent, but Labrador was in Canada while CBR was in the United States.

• Chesapeake is not as popular as Labrador.

• The weights and heights are almost the same in both breeds, but Labrador weighs slightly more than chessie does.

• Both have a double coat, but Labrador has a uniform outer coat unlike the Chessie’s short and straight fur on the face and legs with wavy hairs on the other parts.
